It will help you orient yourself during product discovery and customer interviews. If that&#8217;s the case, this guide might not align with the stage your product is in, but don&#8217;t let that stop you from learning!<br><br>Regardless weather you have a product, or not, this guide will offer you an opportunity to build your ICP in the right way \u2013 starting from your customer, their pain, and their aspirations. Think about what aspirations they have. I don\u2019t think there is one way to do it. Or a right way to do it\u2026Above all, to be successful at this stage you\u2019ll have to use your own common sense, and general knowledge of the world to extrapolate based on what you know about your ideal customer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group is-style-superbaddons-card has-global-padding is-layout-constrained wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-7d3e50b64e74004b6b7f4ef8f6a09e01\" style=\"color:#2c53c9\"><strong>Age<\/strong>:&nbsp; M\/F: 25\u201345+ <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0aea280c4c96367e06a362cf24134711\" style=\"color:#42434d\">Starting with the age bracket, we can deduct that those Engineers will be using social media, and other communication channels that are commonly used by people in those ages. That leaves us with: YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tik Tok, X (Twitter), Pinterest, WhatsApp \/ Messenger.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f85ff3b51264c8ed94404e08d5978424\" style=\"color:#2c53c9\"><strong>Job Title<\/strong>: AI \/ ML Engineer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-23eb2e76256182882a30710a8259b349\" style=\"color:#42434d\">The job title tells us that they work with Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning, and that they\u2019re Engineers, so we can use that to deduct that they\u2019ll be technical thinkers, more often skeptical about mainstream media, which will exclude some of the ones we covered in the previous panel. That would narrow our channels to X, LinkedIN, Youtube. It\u2019s general knowledge that Engineers are on X, LinkedIn for work opportunities, and Youtube for entertainment. We can also add Stack Overflow, GitHub, and Reddit as niche channels that they use for work, and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e455058b307363db930f88aa27dbf894\" style=\"color:#2c53c9\"><strong>Education: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-fb0bb60429ec91da4cecd922260c855d\" style=\"color:#42434d\">The field of study here can give us an idea of the interests, and groups that these people have. On their own they can\u2019t do a lot for us beyond serving as a targeting parameter inside advertising systems, but they can help us extrapolate ideas for product interests. For example someone who\u2019s studied mechatronics will surely be interested in robotics, and mechanics, and that IS something we can use down the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-009d15102251882c04446f1a5222f862\" style=\"color:#2c53c9\"><strong>Locations: <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-2b87547a9fe4d2efa207d143ba943e5d\" style=\"color:#42434d\">This is something we can intake as is, no need for further investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-3a1806dc7530c3ef286142189d339340\" style=\"color:#2c53c9\"><strong>Pain points &amp; Aspirations<\/strong>: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-e82a9735812960240bd61beb1f0ce55a\" style=\"color:#42434d\">From the pain points &amp; aspirations we can deduct that the people working in these companies handle large amounts of data which means that we can rule out small companies that only have a couple of robots. By the same logic we can extrapolate that the companies that handle larger amounts of data would have more robots to support so we\u2019ll add that to our targeting list.<br><br>&amp; so on, and so forth&#8230; <br><br>By now you should have an idea how this works. It absolutely is more art than science in <strong>most <\/strong>ways, and yes, there are other ways you can do this. More scientific ones at that as well. Until we start testing these assumptions in real market conditions we won\u2019t know if they\u2019re accurate, or not. And that applies even when we have concrete market data that\u2019s empirical. Therefore we should approach all marketing activities with a healthy does of skepticism.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color has-superbfont-medium-font-size wp-elements-992962d85f4095a5c16b001a422d498a\" style=\"color:#42434d\"><em>From our experience at least 60% of the time what we think will work turns out to be incorrect, or at least partially incorrect. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-32eb1853b659b133db1351e7c5270e68\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">To remediate this risk we always apply the LEAN Startup principles to building GTM strategies (and generally to everything we can) and we try to validate our assumptions before we commit more resources to the process.<br><br><em>This helps us keep resource spending &amp; time commitment to the minimum, which in turn allows us to be flexible and agile.<\/em><br><br>Without this way of thinking we risk investing resources in something that has a high chance of failing, and you don\u2019t want to that as a startup because your resources and time is limited.<br><br>So, let\u2019s talk about how we go about this in practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6.<strong>Validate Your Assumptions Before Committing<\/strong> <strong>On A Larger Scale<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0037a862c133ada50a274ff76a8ffbca\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">Before you go on and set your GTM strategy free in the wild, run a smaller validation campaign on a couple of the marketing channels that you came up with earlier.<br><br><em>We <\/em>usually do that by running paid ads, as this is by far the fastest, and most accurate way we can validate our ICP, and marketing messages, as organic channels take time to develop, and aren\u2019t as precise as we need them to be.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-5323688db0582aff679568c13453803b\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">So, I strongly advise you to set aside a small testing budget of 500-1000$ for ads in order to go trough the validation phase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-6868b83b66f7ec056c9dd0b5525771db\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">In terms of time, you should be able to gather insights in 1-2 weeks of time if you have everything else in place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. <strong>A\/B Testing Different Assumptions&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-448ba134c17615273d7019d1249dd3cb\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">To maximize the impact of your validation campaign you should be A\/B testing the different components of your strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-0feca21aa03e430215962e30c6abad43\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">Have 1-2 versions of the ICP, the final messaging, and run these tests several marketing channels at the same time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-f5cc7e859a63a1dfe03a5c29054affd2\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">Each variant you create should be marginally different than the other one.<br><br>Focus on testing fundamentally different concepts &#8211; different brand tones, value propositions, different product formulas, and styles.<br><br>Large changes should produce big differences in results, and that\u2019s what you\u2019re aiming for. You\u2019re trying to see what resonates best with your market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:5px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. <strong>Once You\u2019ve Passed Product Validation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-98ea6ccd235d3ee677f0b1c010a366f1\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">You\u2019ve now passed trough product validation. you should now have a clear idea of where there\u2019s an indication of product-market-fit.<br><br>Ideally you\u2019ve spoken to a few real customers, and had your product in their hands.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-9a8dba7bd281bd6145fdc99d509195bb\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">You\u2019ve gathered more insights, preferomed more interviews, and know more about your customers than before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-4fefee88ac2c676a5d4c6df12b0d6f51\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">You can now approach product-development to improve your product and build something that\u2019s even more adjusted than before.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-d977db1a47d6f38457353555e8a9a099\" style=\"color:#1e293b\">You also can commit to building your marketing channels for the long(er) term.<br><br>Use the same methodology we\u2019ve described in this guide to refine your strategy and build on top of it. There\u2019s nothing more to it. Just iterate until you\u2019ve succeeded.<br><br>If things didn\u2019t work out for you, and you did not get good results from your validation campaign don\u2019t despair.
